After writing songs for awesome bands like One Direction and catching the attention of stars like Jamie Foxx, it’s no surprise that everyone is anticipating Ed Sheeran’s own stuff.

Recently we sat down with British singer-songwriter to chat about his upcoming album “+”…yep, that’s really the name of it.

So what should we expect?

“I have to be honest, being a singer-songwriter I write very selfishly, I write for me,” he told us.

Ed’s not afraid to put his relationship business out there in his songs either. He’s a relationship kind of guy too, confessing that every love song he has ever written, like those on the new album, are about his ex-girlfriend that he dated for 4 years.

Sound familiar Adele?

He also admitted that one of his ultimate dreams is to be married, have kids, and be comfortable.

Is this for real?!

He does have a bad-boy flare though! Ed gave us a little tour of his now 21 tattoos that he has gotten while on the road.

So hott!… (Sorry, Mr. Sheeran!)

His new album is available on June 12. Until then, listen to some of the songs off of “+” below…

Are you digging Ed’s sound?

Cannes 2012: Shame, Money and Long Movies

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 20•12

A few hours after berating the world for abandoning Haiti, Sean Penn put some other people's money where his mouth is at Cannes. He, director Paul Haggis, model Petra Nemcova and designer Giorgio Armani hosted a black-tie fundraiser for Haiti, raising more than $1 million by auctioning off everything from tickets to the Golden Globes to a guitar autographed by Bono.

The dinner was a rare Cannes charity event not tied to a film in the festival. The AP's Jake Coyle reports that Penn, who managed to make black tie look casual, greeted his guests by explaining why he was hosting the event: "Because once upon a time I was ashamed of myself, more than I am today – as I think you should be."

Guests included Robert De Niro, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Lyle Lovett, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Gerard Butler and the ubiquitous Jessica Chastain and Diane Kruger.

Also readSean Penn Explodes in Cannes: 'The Whole F—ing World Abandoned Haiti'

And many of the bids climbed into the six figures (in Euros), including 100,000 Euros for the Golden Globes tickets, which Haggis "tried to sweeten … by throwing in a date with Butler."

If producer Megan Ellison has been hitting the parties at Cannes, she's kept a typically low profile. Ellison, who recently made TheWrap's list of producers who are changing Hollywood and who has two films in competition, gets the profile treatment in the Los Angeles Times. Ben Fritz and Steven Zeitchik call her "a 26-year-old former party girl with social anxiety issues" and "a motorcycle-riding iconoclast who dropped out of USC and attends meetings in Led Zeppelin t-shirts."

Also read10 Producers Who Will Change Hollywood: 2012 Edition

Of course, Ellison being Ellison, the writers never got an interview with the press-shy producer – her only quotes come from Twitter, where she's said things like "The question isn't who's going to let me. It's who's going to stop me."

As for the other folks who talk about Ellison, opinion ranges from "Megan is like a patron of the arts" to "I think she has the potential to be the next Harvey Weinstein."

Another youngster  making waves at Cannes is 23-year-old French-Canadian director Xavier Dolan. His new film, "Lawrence Anyways," which is screening in Un Certain Regard, runs two hours and 41 minutes. According to Jeff Wells, that running time had led to new rule-of-thumb jokingly making the rounds at Cannes: The ratio of a film's length and its director's age should be no more than 5/1.

Which is to say, a 23-year-old director like Dolan shouldn't make a movie any longer than 115 minutes, a number he overshot by 46 minutes.

That doesn't necessarily mean "Laurence Anyways" is bad (Wells opted not to see it, while Stephen Dalton approvingly called it a "sprawling exercise in high camp") – but when folks start grumbling about the length of a film, that's never a good sign. "'Laurence Anyways'," added Dalton, "commits the rudimentary error of mistaking bigness for greatness."

Speaking of long films, the restored and lengthened cut of Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America" screened on Friday night at Cannes, all four-hours-plus of it. (Leone was 55 when he made the panoramic look at turn-of-the-century gangs in New York, so he was actually obeying the age-times-five rule.)

"The new footage that debuted [Friday] is every bit as essential as one could hope," wrote Simon Abrams in a review. " … [T]he new cut is revelatory. Its restoration has only served to make this masterpiece that much more fulfilling."

While much of the attention at Cannes has gone to films in the main competition, In Contention's Guy Lodge has been nosing around the sidebars – which, he says, is where he found the best movie of the festival so far. It's "No," a satire of Pinochet-era Chile from director Pablo Larrain, which is screening in the Directors Fortnight program.

The film stars Gael Garcia Bernal and deals with the 1988 referendum that overthrew the Chilean dictator (the "no" votes won, hence the title); it is, writes Lodge, Larrain's "most narratively robust and emotionally rousing film to date, a hearty celebration of hard-earned democracy spiked with just enough of the director's acidly crooked humor to remind us whose house we're in."

Facebook IPO: Stock Falters, Still Raises $16 Billion

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 20•12

Call it the most disappointing $16 billion raised in investment history.

Facebook stock is off to a rocky start after its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO), jumping more than 10 percent in the first few minutes of trading before sellers swept into the market and that gain evaporated.

“The stock is trading right at the IPO price,” one expert told the L.A. Times. “They didn’t want that in a million years. A traditional IPO is up 10% or 15%.”

Zuckerberg Rings Bell

The stock most recently hovered at about $40, only $2 above what shares were priced at late Thursday. Shares touched $38 multiple times during trading.

Investors also had to deal with a nearly three-hour delay for the stock to open. The Nasdaq kept the stock halted as it processed a crush of buy and sell orders.

The inauspicious opening after the Facebook IPO suggests that retail investors paid close attention to reports of soft financials and big selling by insiders.

Still, Facebook raised $16 billion in what will go down as the third-largest public offering in U.S. history and the biggest ever for a technology company.

Could be worse, right? Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the Nasdaq opening bell from company headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.

Eduardo Saverin, one of the company’s co-founders, made news this week by giving up U.S. citizenship as a means of limiting his tax liability.

Comcast Ups Data Usage Limits Following Netflix Complaint

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 20•12

Comcast Corp. announced Thursday that it is lifting its cap on customers' monthly bandwidth use in favor of a model that will enable subscribers to buy as much bandwidth as they want.

In a conference call with reporters, Comcast Executive Vice President David Cohen said the new policy — which will increase bandwidth caps from 250 gigabytes a month to at least 300 gigabytes a month — should address a complaint raised by Netflix that Comcast discriminates against the rental and streaming giant. Netflix's concern partly stemmed from Comcast's exemption of its XfinityTV app on Xbox from the bandwidth caps.

Also read: Netflix Turning Up the Heat on AT&T, Comcast and TWC Over Data Caps

“This really isn’t the call to debate the propriety or the impropriety of the way in which we’re treating the Xfinity app,” said Cohen, in response to a reporter’s question. “It is a real stretch to create a discrimination argument here,” said Cohen, contending that the company’s XfinityTV app is completely legal and appropriate.

Cohen noted that Netflix had acknowledged in a recent earnings call that the static 250 GB cap had not interfered with its service.

Cohen also said if the static 250 gigabyte cap didn’t get in the way of Netflix’s service, then a 20% increase to the 300 GB limit, along with the ability to purchase additional bandwidth, gives Comcast customers the ability to have “infinite use of their service, as long as they pay their fair share.”

Also read: Sen. Franken Wants Obama Administration to Investigate Comcast

Netflix spokesman Joris Evers responded in a statement: "Increasing the data cap is a small step in the right direction, but unfortunately Comcast continues to treat its own Internet delivered video different under the cap than other Internet delivered video. We continue to stand by the principle that ISPs should treat all providers of video services equally."

“It’s nice that they changed the cap,” Art Brodsky, a spokesman for the watchdog Public Knowledge, told TheWrap. “But we still don’t know the basis for the change or why a cap is necessary.”

Joel Kelsey, a policy adviser for the watchdog Free Press, said in a statement: "While the move to increase its caps are overdue, the notion that Comcast would charge an exorbitant rate for additional bandwidth — while continuing to exempt its own traffic under its Xbox deal — illustrates that Comcast is really trying to discourage subscribers from experimenting with online video alternatives. We call on Comcast to drop the caps and these exorbitant overage fees entirely."

Taylor Swift ‘Eyes Open’ Lyrics Video

The Taylor Swift Eyes Open music video may not be here yet, but Taylor did fans a favor, releasing an Eyes Open lyric video.

Check out the Eyes Open lyrics below and the video, which shows handwritten words on paper and Post-Its, as well as sketches in the fun stop-motion animated video.

So cute!

Taylor just donated $4 million to Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to support music education, including the Taylor Swift Education Center.

Love her!

Taylor Swift Eyes Open lyrics:

“Everybody’s waiting
Everybody’s watching
Even when you’re sleeping
Keep your eyes, eyes open

The tricky thing is
Yesterday we were just children
Playing soldiers, just pretending
Dreaming dreams with happy endings
In backyards,
Winning battles with the wooden swords
But now we’ve stepped into a cruel world
Where everybody stands up,
And keeps score
Keep your eyes open

Everybody’s waiting
For you to breakdown
Everybody’s watching
To see the fallout
Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping
Keep your eyes open
Keep your eyes open
Keep your eyes open

So here you are
Two steps ahead and staying on guard
Every lesson forms a new scar
They never thought you’d make it this far
But turn around
Now they’ve surrounded you
It’s a showdown
And nobody comes to save you now
But you got something they don’t
Yeah, you got something they don’t
You just gotta keep your eyes open

Everybody’s waiting
For you to breakdown
Everybody’s watching
To see the fallout
Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping
Keep your eyes open
Keep your eyes open
Keep your eyes

Keep your feet ready
Heartbeat steady
Keep your eyes open
Keep your aim locked
The night grows dark
Keep your eyes open

Keep your eyes open (4x)

Everybody’s waiting
For you to breakdown
Everybody’s watching
To see the fallout
Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping
Keep your eyes open”

Cannes 2012: Paul Schrader To Write Kremlin-Financed Russian Ballerina Drama

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 19•12

Paul Schrader, writer of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” has signed to write a drama about Mathilde Kschessinska, a famed Russian ballerina and mistress to the last Russian tsar, in a ground-breaking project backed by the Kremlin.

Producers David American producers David Weisman and Anatoly Davydov announced the project at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.

The film will be financed by the V. Vinokur Fund for the Support of Russian Culture & Arts under the auspices of the Kremlin, and is an unusual collaboration between a renowned American screenwriter and a Russian-backed production.

The film will be shot in English with a mixed Russian and American cast.

Kschessinska played mistress to at least four aristocratic men who controlled the crumbling Romanov dynasty, including Russia’s last Tsar, Nicholas II. Rising from poverty, through her extraordinary gift for ballet, Kschessinska lived a life of luxury on the cusp of the Russian revolution.

“Kschessinska’s life is a powerful metaphor for Russian culture and evokes the best of Russian arts,” said Schrader.  “She was a first native prima ballerina in the country that saw the highest achievement in that art form. She was not only a witness to the critical period of Russian history, she was a player in that history, only to be thrown aside.”

Said Weisman: “Kschessinska was worshipped and reviled,” said Weisman. “Nicknames such as ‘Black-eyed She-Devil of the Imperial Ballet’ and ‘Mathilde the Magnificent’ echo the seething jealousy and boundless admiration Kschessinska provoked during her time.  Having narrowly escaped the Bolshevik bloodbath, for fifty years she taught ballet in Paris where she died only a few months before her hundredth birthday, in 1971.”

Schrader is the legendary writer of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.” His directing credits include “American Gigolo and “Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters.”

The film will be made in collaboration with Russian producer Vladimir Vinokur and his partner the Russian ballet impresario Vladislav Moskalev.

Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer Strip in New ‘Magic Mike’ Trailer

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 19•12

Who wants to see Channing Tatum naked?

For those that missed his prior career as a stripper, that time is rapidly approaching.

Tatum almost takes it all off in the new trailer for “Magic Mike,” Steven Soderbergh’s foray into a world where clothing is most definitely optional.

Though Tatum goes no further than a banana hammock, the second trailer for the Warner Bros. film features plenty of on-stage gyrating and disrobing, as well as a bit of Rihanna — three things that go hand-in-hand.

Tatum (aka “Magic Mike”) is seen mentoring Pettyfer’s character, as directed by the strip club’s owner, played by Matthew McConaughey. For his part, McConaughey dons a workout outfit reminiscent of Miami in the 1980s.

The person wearing the most clothing? That would be Cody Horn, who plays Pettyfer’s sister. Sorry guys.

Sean Penn Rips “The Whole F–king World” For Abandoning Haiti

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 19•12

Sean Penn isn’t a fan of us right now. Or you, or anyone else.

On Friday at the Cannes Film Festival, the actor-activist slammed the media and public for abandoning Haiti after the devastating earthquake in 2010.

“It’s not only celebrities who went for a day,” Penn told reporters of his perceived injustice. “It’s the whole f–king world. It’s all of you. The reason we have ‘Haiti fatigue’ is because there was never a commitment in the first place.”

Sean Penn Mustache

A vocal proponent of humanitarian aid, Penn also called upon President Barack Obama to meet with Haiti’s newly elected president Michel Joseph Martelly.

“It’s time our elegant, formidable president stood side by side [with Martelly],” he said.

The outspoken actor was part of a news conference with Petra Nemcova and director Paul Haggis, all of whom work with nonprofit organizations in Haiti.

The trio joined forces for a benefit for the country at the famed cinema gathering.

Reality TV Hits the Cannes Red Carpet

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 19•12

Reality TV is getting the Cannes treatment at the world’s premiere film festival. Italian director Matteo Garrone (pictured above right with actor Nando Paone) brought Reality to the fest’s competition, following up his critically acclaimed gangster pic Gomorrah several years ago. The film centers on a village fisherman who sacrifices everything for the perceived chance to become a reality-television celebrity.

After being persuaded to apply for the Italian version of Big Brother, Luciano gets a follow up interview in Rome. He is initially reluctant to pursue the role, but after an interview he thinks went well, Luciano begins to believe he’s in the running for the series. After returning to Naples, he begins to believe he’s still “being cast” as he goes about his daily life. Soon, he lives as if he’s already on the show. A chance meeting with people from Rome turns into an “incognito casting session,” and soon it gets worse as he loses sense of actual reality.

“After Gomorrah, I was waiting for a theme that would be as powerful,” Garrone said in Cannes on Friday morning. “I wanted a surprising film, but after Gomorrah, I didn’t realize I’d be hitting a brick wall.”

The film is chock full of thematic takeaways, including the religious metaphor that through good works, one can achieve paradise: In the film, Luciano begins to give up his worldly possessions, believing the people secretly watching him will be charmed by his selflessness — much to the horror of his family. Reality could also be an indictment of the meteoric rise of reality television itself over the past decade, though Garrone said the film takes a neutral stance — at least officially.

Obama Divorce Story: New Book Claims Michelle Nearly Left Barack in 2000

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 19•12

The controversial new biography of President Barack Obama claims that his wife, Michelle Obama, planned to leave the future president in 2000.

Is the divorce story real? Is anything in the book?

The unauthorized biography, which Klein claims is based on nearly 200 interviews, has been dismissed by presidential spokesperson Eric Schultz.

“Ed Klein has a proven history of reckless fabrication in order to sell books,” he said. “Nobody in their right mind would believe the nonsense in this one.”

Nevertheless, the Obama divorce story is the latest revelation in the book – which also discusses his ex Genevieve Cook – to generate major buzz.

In The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House, out this week, Klein claims the divorce nearly happened eight years into the Obamas’ marriage.

After Obama failed to listen to his wife’s warnings in challenging Bobby Rush for his U.S. House seat in 2000 and got creamed, their relationship cooled.

“During the dark days that followed his defeat, he turned to Michelle for comfort. But she was in no mood for sympathy,” Klein reportedly writes.

“He had refused to listen to her warnings about taking on Rush.”

The primary left them in debt and Barack depressed, Klein claims. “Michelle actually had divorce papers drawn up,” he writes, citing one of her friends.

“Obama was so depressed that some of his friends worried that he was suicidal,” the book adds, without elaboration on that particular point.

Obama, of course, was still in the Illinois State Senate, and went on to win a U.S. Senate seat in 2004 that helped establish his national credentials.

But Michelle almost vetoed the Senate race, too.

Northwestern University professor Steven Rogers told Klein that Obama talked about his ambition after they met at a golf fund-raiser.

“My wife will not allow me to run for the Senate until I clear up the debts from my unsuccessful run for Congress,” Obama said, according to Rogers.

‘Battleship’ Review: Sheer Adrenaline Keeps Dopey Action Epic Afloat

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 18•12

As a defender of the 1985 comedy “Clue,” I can’t automatically reject the idea of basing a feature film on a board game. But the game Clue comes with characters and a plot and a house. Battleship comes with a grid and boats and pegs.

All those things turn up in “Battleship,” a big, loud, stupid Hollywood movie that winds up looking all the better by virtue of not being as elephantine and deafening and moronic as a Michael Bay “Transformers” adventure. Peter Berg and writers Erich and John Hoeber aren’t interested in nuance or character or wit, but they imbue the movie with enough adrenaline and forward momentum that I was never bored. And that, sadly, makes it better than most of the other expensive and over-hyped films of its ilk.

Taylor Kitsch does his damnedest to channel Tom Cruise’s Maverick character from “Top Gun” — the “John Carter” star plays Alex Hopper, a troublemaker who nonetheless has lots of potential. (We know this because every three minutes or so, someone yells, “You have so much potential!” at him.) The younger brother of distinguished naval officer Stone Hopper (Alexander Skarsgård, whose first line of dialogue betrays his Scandinavian accent) and boyfriend of Sam (Brooklyn Decker), the nubile daughter of Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson), Alex nonetheless finds himself on the verge of getting kicked out of the Navy.

But then the aliens come. Drawn to Earth by a high-powered signal sent to them — scientists are stupid, the movie seems to be saying — five vessels arrive, creating an impenetrable dome that covers both Hawaii (where the alien-contacting satellite dishes are located) and a naval exercise where U.S. ships are engaging in mock combat with fleets from various Asian countries.

Firing a series of peg-like missiles, the aliens take out several ships, and Alex finds himself having to command his own vessel. Can he get along with his Japanese rival long enough to defeat the lizardy humanoid E.T.s? Can Sam and her physical therapy patient and a techno-nerd (Hamish Linklater) stop the first wave of aliens from contacting their brethren?

You can probably guess. What you might not foresee is that Rihanna, playing a weapons expert, doesn’t embarrass herself as an actress; she neither hits the heights of Mariah Carey in “Precious,” nor the depths of Carey in “Glitter,” but her work is perfectly serviceable. It also won’t surprise that the script is full of holes — the aliens knock out radio and the internet in Hawaii, but Alex’s ship can still summon a grid of buoys on the computer? — or that the movie is loaded with shameless product placement for brands of soda and fast food that will not be mentioned here.

The studios seem hell-bent on making Kitsch happen as a leading man, but once again, he’s adequate at best. At times, his performance seems so blurry as to merely be a conduit through which teen boys can imagine themselves saving the day in his place. (Join the Navy, the movie seems to be saying. A lot.)

Nonetheless, this thing lasts 131 minutes but almost never drags, and there’s something to be said for keeping this much baloney aloft for that long. Like the bulky and unwieldy vessel for which it’s named, “Battleship” is both indefensible and unassailable.

Reese Witherspoon West Memphis Drama, ‘Devil’s Knot,’ Gets Worldview Financing

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 18•12

"The Devil's Knot," a drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth and dealing with the three teenagers falsely convicted of satanic murders in the case that became known as the West Memphis 3, has won financial backing from Worldview Entertainment.

Worldview announced its backing of the project at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.

Atom Egoyan (“The Sweet Hereafter”) will direct, and two of the three former teenagers, Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin – who were released from prison last summer after 18 years – will also co-produce the film.

The long-running tale of thwarted justice has been the subject of a series of documentaries, including three by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, and another by Amy Berg that screened at Sundance this year. The third by Berlinger and Sinofsky, HBO’s “Paradise Lost: Purgatory,” was completed just as the three defendants were released from prison and aired on HBO this year. It won an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary.

“Devil’s Knot,” written by Paul Harris Boardman and Scott Derrickson, is based on the 2002 bestselling book by investigative journalist Mara Leveritt about the savage murders of three young children. The murders outraged the community, and led to a controversial trial of three teenagers who were accused of killing the kids as part of a satanic ritual. Questions were raised about the trial almost immediately, and the case was taken up by activists who believed the teeangers were railroaded.

The project had previously been developed by Dimension which had the rights since 2006.

The trial made headlines again when the defendants were released in August of 2011 after 18 years in prison. The Arkansas Supreme Court had ordered a new trial — and rather than mount a second trial that would likely result in not-guilty verdicts and open the state to enormous damage claims, state prosecutors opted to offer an unusual and controversial "Alford plea." The plea allowed the three men to plead guilty while maintaining their innocence, and to be released immediately.

Worldview Entertainment, a New York City-based motion picture production and investment company, signed on to finance and produce, with Elizabeth Fowler, Clark Peterson, Richard Saperstein and Worldview CEO, Christopher Woodrow.

The actual defendants Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin will co-produce. The Weinstein Company is handling international sales, beginning this week in Cannes, while CAA will sell North American rights.

Principal photography is set to begin this June in Georgia.

Cannes Review: ‘Paradies: Liebe’ Is About Sex, But It’s Torture

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 18•12

There is always the one movie in Cannes that you wish you could unsee. Last year it was "Michael," the day-to-day meditation of a pedophile with a boy in his basement.  This year, it has to be "Paradies: Liebe," Ulrich Seidl's film about middle-aged white women who go to Kenya to exploit poverty stricken males by paying them for sex.  While the topic is vital and worth exposing, it's mighty hard to sit through a solid two hours of this torture.

Most women of a certain age who have "let themselves go" have long since given up on passionate sex. To be adored and hungered for isn't on the menu. In its place, either sexless companionship or chicken-fried steak and the jackrabbit vibrator. But the truth of it, which is what "Paradies" sets out to illustrate, is that it isn't really sex so much as love that many of these women are after.  But if is to be sex for money, it might as well be as customer-friendly as possible.

We're accustomed to seeing men exploit vulnerable women in poor countries for sex, but we haven't often seen women do it. It's hard to imagine a woman, much less one who looks like your grandmother, needing sex so much she becomes the predator. But just because a woman's sexuality is hidden from view after she reaches middle age doesn't mean it goes away.

The story follows Teresa (Margarete Tiesel), a woman who works with the disabled. She's a single mother to an indifferent teen, and for the most part has nothing in her life that makes her even remotely happy. Life has become a chore. Then her friend tells her how African boy toys in Keyna are ripe for the picking, just waiting for a white "sugar mama." It's a mutually beneficial relationship if everyone plays by the rules — he needs her money, she needs his attention.

Teresa decides to go to a Kenyan resort, and for much of the early part of her trip we watch her parade around in her bra and underwear. The director doesn't want us to see her as a desirable woman. He appears to seek both our disapproval and perhaps our repulsion, and he succeeds at both. Watching Teresa lumber around the room, we can't take our eyes off of her flab, which hangs from her torso and rests on her upper thigh. We silently wonder: What man is going to want to devour that? We hate ourselves for thinking that — but we're all thinking that.

What follows is a display of the very desperation that motivates young African males to seduce women like Teresa, playing an odd courting ritual. First comes the hand-holding, then the trip to the young man's improverished village, then the purchase of a condom, then awkward sex in a tiny hovel. At first, Teresa resists the advances of her fake beau, but soon she meets a guy who knows exactly how to seduce her. She falls for it. When that goes sour, she evolves, finally, into a woman who is willing to get her money's worth.

In one horrifying scene, four German middle-aged women are groping a stripper, trying to get him hard. The one who can do it wins – but, of course, the bitter truth is that none of those women will do it for him. Still, they are undeterred. By now, they've mostly shut out those voices of protest — they've stopped caring whether the men desire them or not. This is a financial deal, not an emotional one.

Seidl never lets you forget that in parts of Africa, and other places in the world, there is almost nothing you can't buy. In one of the more haunting scenes, African men stand immobile beyond the boundaries of the resort and the women sit watching them, knowing that they can have their pick. All they have to do is be willing to accept how disgusting it is. Once they get past that, they're capable of grabbing a tiny piece of sexual pleasure even if they have to pay through the nose for it.

Teresa's own sexuality is buried beneath layers of self-loathing and a misleading desire for romance, passion and love. She arrogantly and stupidly thinks she can find that on the streets of Kenya, that it might be possible that they could ever be equals. This blindness makes us hate Teresa and all of her kind — can't they see what they are doing?

It is a grotesque, draining experience, watching "Paradies" play out. These women might think they've found paradise — who knows how long this has been going on, and whether it continues to this day? — but what they've really found is hell on earth.

American Idol Results: Who Made the Finals?

Written By: Evan Beardal - May• 18•12

I love you guys so much because you have the courage to have a dream.

That’s what Steven Tyler told the remaining three American Idol contestants tonight. Alas, for one of Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet, the dream is now over. So… following a painful Ice Age 3 tie-in and a performance by Adam Lambert, who got voted out of season 11?

Idol Final 3

JOSHUA LEDET!

The talented crooner takes it very well and even brings his mom on stage as he sings farewell via “Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”

This leaves Jessica Sanchez, likely the best voice of the season, and Phillip Phillips, the obligatory cute-white-guy-with-a-guitar-who-wins-every-season, to square off on next week’s finale.

Do you think Ledet deserved to be voted off?
